the beautiful arrival

a song for what life brought home

Some joys arrive already knowing how deeply they will be loved.

There are children who enters a family.
And there are children who somehow seem to bring the family with them.
He was one of those.
You could see it in the smallest things.
A hand always wanting for his.
A face turning whenever he spoke.
Two people never too busy for one more question.
Nothing extraordinary was happening.
They were simply spending an afternoon together.
But sometimes love is easiest to see when nothing extraordinary is happening.
It was everywhere.

the quieter language

He had a lot to say.
About important things.
About completely unimportant things.
About things only he understood.
And they listened to all of it.
Not because every question needed an answer.
But because he mattered.
He climbed into their arms.
He wandered away.
He came back.
A hand found his.
A kiss found his cheek.
And again and again, without anyone saying it,
the same little message reached him:
You are here
You are ours.
And we are so glad you are here.
la vita bella
Maybe this is the beautifull life.
Not somewhere else.
Not someday.
Here.
Bare feet beside the sea.
A small hand inside a larger one.
A ridiculous question.
A kiss he pretends he doesn't want.
ulous
Three people walking nowhere in particular.
And somehow having everything they need.
Perhaps children do that to us.
We spend years learning about life.
Than they arive,
and teach us how little it takes to love it.
what he will carry

He will grow.
Of course he will.
One day that little hand will no longer reach automatically for theirs.
He will walk ahead.
He will have places to go that they cannot go with him.
And he probably won't remember this afternoon.
The sea.
The conversations.
The way they looked at him.
But perhaps we don't need to remember everything for it to remain inside us.
Perhaps being loved this much becomes part of who we are.
Part of how we trust.
How we laugh.
How we hold someone else's hand one day.
Years from now, he may forget how often they reached for him.
But he will remember it in another way.
In the person he becomes.
They gave him their hands.
He gave them another way to love life.
That is The Beautiful Arrival.
every family leaves something for tomorrow to remember.

Another story is waiting just beyond this one.
